WHERE

The research activities take place in Alessandria or Vercelli at the Department of Science and Technological Innovation (DiSIT) of the University of Eastern Piedmont.

To be enrolled you must have a degree (old system) or a specialist or master's degree.

In the three years of the course, training is provided by carrying out research activities and participating in courses taught by internal teachers or external experts.

Educational objectives

The disciplines of biology and chemistry are subject to significant and convergent transformations pushed by the impact of advanced technologies. Research at the "chemistry-biology" interface is a source of innovation in various areas of science ranging from the molecular understanding of the mechanism of living systems, to the discovery and development of new molecules and materials with applications and implications in the therapeutic and diagnostic field, sensors and bioelectronics up to very significant applications in energy, environmental and nutrition issues.

The Doctoral course in Chemistry and Biology was created to respond to the need to train future leaders in this area, essential for scientific research that supports modern and dynamic economy and social development. To achieve this target, the teaching staff is made up of highly qualified researchers and international visibility from DiSIT (6 of the 16 reference teachers are part of the Top Italian Scientists, Hind≥30) providing all the skills necessary for the two activated curricula. The envisaged training course aims to integrate and harmonize the necessary specializations in a multidisciplinary context capable of creating ideas and innovation better than those guaranteed by the individual disciplines both in basic research and in technology transfer and business creation.

Expected employment and professional opportunities

Professional placement in private companies that deal with basic research in Chemistry and Biology. Being a professional qualification of high technological level, in the purposes are also considered those deriving from those provided by the local environment, in the field of science applied in productive and service activities. Prospective PhDs will be able to find a professional development in the same areas previously covered by the master's degrees they received, but spending their professional qualification of high technological level and marked inter-disciplinarity towards activities characterized by a non-secondary interest in fundamental and applied research and for the technology transfer. In fact, PhDs will be able to assume functions of high responsibility in various industrial sectors (small, medium and large industries, public and private research centers, professional laboratories, hospital laboratories, etc.) by applying the acquired disciplinary methods. They will be able to carry out and coordinate investigation and management activities also in the areas of food safety, environmental protection and industrial quality. They may be engaged at the highest levels of management in analysis and quality control laboratories or in research laboratories, both public and private. They will be able to take on positions of responsibility in industries operating in the new materials, health and medicines, food, energy sectors.
